Yeah - I think I will have to assign values to all tile types with ) being good clear terrain and 1 being a blockage - have it add thee values based on all possible paths and choose the lowest value - something like that......

I dunno - that's why I'm saving it for last! LOL

I spent about one week searching out free-to-use graphics:

Reiner's tilesets was awesome.....a lot of 3D but they translate well to 2D...
Used NetHack stuff for items and tiles....
Ryan Hall did a chunky character set free to use for indie game designers.

Customized most everything in good old photoshop and Pixen.

Buttons and stuff were the ones that come with Illustrator CS

Cave shots were found and Posterized from US federal parks caves.

Just as an FYI to anybody that cares . . .

After re-designing my website: www.frankenspud.com
I made my first post onto macupdate.com.
Since Dinky Dungeon is freeware and the game is fully (mostly) playable all the way through but still missing some finishing touches and a bit of storyline - I thought it would help me to get some real-world beta testing done.

There were over 1000 downloads in the first 5 days! woohoo!
Got lots of feedback and some bug reports too....

Interestingly enough for me who doesn't know much about anything, after releasing to macupdate, a bunch of other mac sites (softpedia, etc..) picked it up too. The total first week downloads are about 1300 or so.
Macupdate seems to definitely be the primo site......

Best of all I received three, count 'em three people who really loved the game and emailed their thanks . . . kinda nice since this is the only form of payment I will see for my 120+ hours of work.

Thanks to the gang (duo?) at TNT for enabling me to have a lot of fun and hopefully share some fun with others...

cheers

Hello, I am loving the game but have hit quite a serious bug.

I got to Level 6 and killed the boss. I couldn't find the exit and I had to go out (of the physical world) so I saved and quit the game.

When I restarted Dinky Dungeon today, I started back on Level 6. But all the teleport pads except the first one (the one that leads to the top left room with the equipment and lava boots) have gone. I cannot get anywhere else. I quit again and reloaded but the same problem: no teleport pads. And the exit lever appears to be in an area only accessible with a teleporter.

Hey Shadowgate - is it the mouse movement and load/save that are causing the most problems - I can extract those and comment them for you if that will help.

The full game is over 14 000 lines of (sadly) very confusing code and likely wouldn't be of much help (there's even 3 different save/load routines).

But let me know the important bits and I can put together something useful I think....

Can't run game

I just downloaded and installed Dinky Dungeon. When I double-click its icon in the Finder, the program launches but the game won't start.

I'm still running Mac OS X 10.4.11 on a Mac mini, recently upgraded 2GB of RAM. I plan to order Mac OS X 10.6 from Apple later this spring.

Game runs under Snow Leopard

Having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I now can play Dinky Dungeon. It seems that I did not have the "Dinky Dungeon Data.DKDN" file previously.
